Q. What is your biggest pet peeve when it comes to books? Maybe you don’t like love triangles or thin plots? Tell us about it!

Well this is a tough one to answer. I do have a few pet peeves. Some involving books in particular--as in I hate seeing people dog-ear the pages, and my books go in a certain order on my shelves (well… the ones that can still fit on the shelves anyway. Boy do I need some new bookshelves! They’re just everywhere now!), and then I have pet peeves that are reserved specifically for my tastes. Which is what I’m assuming the question is really geared toward.
I do get a little annoyed with love triangles. Seriously. They’ve been done so much in the last couple of years that it’s hard for me to really get into them much anymore. But, that’s all it is when I pick up a book with one in there. A slight annoyance. If the author makes the situation unique, and the characters are developed well enough, then I can look completely past that triangle… and even have a great time with it picking out which one I like (“team yadda yadda”, you get my drift? :P). And honestly, even I’ve written with some love triangles in mind, so like I said, it’s not exactly a pet peeve-- just an annoyance at times and not always necessary in some of the material I’ve read recently.

My biggest pet peeve would be underdeveloped characters or characters that are one-dimensional. I’ve always been a reader that likes a good connection with the characters I’m reading about. If I don’t get it, or see any depth in them, then the story could easily become flat for me. I like emotion and detail.

Another peeve is romance that happens too fast, no spark, forced feeling, etc. I don’t read a lot of “heavy romance”, but a lot of the books I read have romantic elements and interests (I.e. Paranormal fantasy, YA, etc.). I hate, hate, hate, reading about two characters that meet, and within a couple of pages, one of the characters already “has feelings” for the other while myself as the reader still barely knows anything about either character to justify the relationship or emotions! It’s cheesy!!

Okay, enough ranting. :P I believe that’s it anyway as far as I can think of. Not really a lot of pet peeves, but big and bothersome enough that I will put a book down real quick if it’s grinding on my nerves in any of these manners.

Happy Friday!!

  1. Hey Pixie. Thanks for stopping by. I am very picky about my books too. I actually have a sign out sheet for the few people I loan books too. I love my books. We seem to agree on the underdeveloped character thing. Ugh.

    Have a great weekend.

  4. Hopping through. Ugh...dog-earing books. I can't stand that either. I did it as a kid, but I know better now.

  6. Love triangles seem to be the popular answer to today's question. A love-at-first-sight plot is so lame.

  7. I agree with these! Underdeveloped characters, insta-love, and unoriginal love triangles can definitely ruin a story for me. Old follower.
