Q: Have you ever looked at book’s cover and thought, This is going to horrible? But, was instead pleasantly surprised? Show us the cover and tell us about the book.
It took me almost a little over a year before I picked this book up and finally sat down to read it. But for a long time, I Am The Messenger by Markus Zusak just sat on my shelf, collecting dust. Part of it was because after I’d finished The Book Thief, I was scared to read anything else by him for awhile--afraid of a disappointment after having read something so absolutely amazing (The Book Thief is one of my all-time favorites)--and part was because this cover didn’t scream “READ ME” at all. It’s a strange cover honestly…very simplistic and kind of cartoon-ish. I get that it’s supposed to go along with the book’s synopsis, but I feel like the art, font, and colors could have been better executed for attention-grabbing. Just my opinion though. :)
In the end, I was extremely glad I did pick it up though!
Happy Friday and happy reading!
OMG yes, what a butt ugly cover. I would never want to pick up that book unless someone brought it to my attention. I'm a real cover snob.
ReplyDeleteWell, the big shiny Printz award does help :)
ReplyDeleteI won a free ebook last year for a romance novel - I was tyring to give the genre a chance since I'm not so much a fan. The cover was of a shirtless dude, super cheesy, although it was trying to give a more modern slant to it. But the story was more of a crime caper by a strong and funny female character. There was romantic tension in parts, and a steamy scene or two toward the end, but the cover really did the story an injustice. I would never have picked it up if I hadn't won it and it was a great fast paced mysetery.
Hey Great post :)

New follower! I would have to agree! Not a very eye catching cover - but he is an awesome author! Here is my FF if you'd like to follow back: http://www.theonceandfuturelibrarian.blogspot.com/2012/03/follow-friday-9.html
ReplyDeleteHopping through. Not a fan of that cover but I've meant to read that book for years.
